Occasionally we all like to get weird and practice the ’shock and awe’ on our near and dear ones. Remember the days when as a child you would get behind the curtain and wait for mom to walk by, and the moment she did you would spring out, you shriek loud and your palm turned into claws with your fingers curled in. It would leave her startled and you would thoroughly enjoy that shocked look on her face.

That was fun. In those days, contact lenses were not so frequently used to enhance the shock effect neither were we allowed to use them as kids. Well, kids are still not supposed to use them but with the advent of newer technology, ground breaking innovations have taken place adding altogether new chapters to the evolutionary history of contact lenses. Contact lenses, thus, have stepped beyond their conventional role of vision correction and have become part of fashion and style.

Crazy contact lenses, as they have now come to be known as, fall under that category. The only difference being that they are not there to change the look to look better but to appear a little too different and, at times, plainly scary.

These lenses are zero power lenses and are normally available in two varieties– monthly lenses and standard lenses. The monthly ones can be worn over a period of one month or 30 time on and off. The standard lenses, on the other hand, can be worn for as long as 18 months on and off.

These crazy ones have to used with care and caution. Avoid make-up, sprays and perfumes in order to avoid damage to the lenses, for they might sustain damage without your realizing, which can be harmful for your eyes in the long run.

Being zero powered lenses, they are sometimes shared by the people in much the same way as sunglasses are. Don’t do it because they are very different from sunglasses due to their proximity with the living tissues of the eye. Sharing lenses could cause infection. So, avoid.

Prior to handling them wash your hands properly and always clean and disinfect the lenses with the prescribed solution only. Make sure that you use the solution manufactured by an approved and reputable company. Since these lenses are not used everyday, they must be stored carefully. When it is time to discard them, do dispense with them even if you have worn them only a few times. The desire to derive value for money in such cases is quite dangerous. After all, eyes are precious. Right?

It seems that contact lenses have become one of the hottest items now being sold around the world and they are available almost anywhere, from your local drugstore, to beauty centres and even at your own ophthalmologists. But the fastest and easiest place to buy them is now online.

Not only are there a wide variety of contact lenses available to purchase online, which fall in to 2 main groups. The first being those which are prescribed by a doctor or those which have been specially designed. Such specially designed contacts that can be purchased are those made with Silicone Hydrogel, which are created using less water than will be found in normal contact lenses and because of this they are less prone to becoming dehydrated whilst being worn. Many people who wear these kinds of lenses find them very comfortable and can wear them for extended periods of time with out any discomfort.

One of the biggest benefits of being able to purchase contact lenses online is the convenience. All that anyone needs to do is use the mouse and click and few buttons and wait for their order to be delivered directly to their home. Unfortunately although it is easy to purchase lenses online you must remember that you should exercise some caution when choosing which ones to buy.

Below are provided a number of points which you should consider and which will help you make purchasing your contact lenses online just that little bit easier.

1. Do not just look at the photo also read the product description as well. This will help to ensure that the product you are purchasing is the right one for you. You do not want to end up buying a pair which you can not use. So remember to review the product carefully prior to purchase.

2. Remember to look at what you are buying. If you have been to see your optometrist or doctor and are now completing the online prescription form all well and good. However, if you are someone who is buying them to just make you look good, then don’t. It is much better if you learn about contact lenses first, and always remember that contact lenses have been specifically designed for medical purposes first and foremost rather than just to make someone look good.

3. It is a good idea to compare the prices of contact lenses prior to making any purchase. Since you happen to be online it is certainly no problem to look at one or different site stores in a matter of seconds. It is a good idea to match products prices on ones that are the same as what you want and look for those stores which may be offering a discount, free, or a reduced price or one’s with a product rebate prior to making any purchase.

4. Always check the store’s inventory. It is best to remember that contact lenses not only come in different shapes, forms and sizes as well and if you need a specially designed pair and it is not in the store where you are looking then move on to another. Certainly you will soon find that what is not in one store, will certainly be in another and it is best if you look for those stores that have loads of stock as the chances of finding what you want are much higher with them.

5. It is best if you deal only with those that are trustworthy and well established online company and it is best to look for an online store that not only provides you with a secure shopping experience, but has a physical address and phone number in the contact section of their site.

6. Next remember to read the sites shipping information fully. Say you require your lenses in a day or two, you may find that not all stores are able to deliver that quickly to you. So keep in mind when you want your lenses by prior to making a purchase online. Also looking at the shipping rates that these sites are charging as they can vary vastly between each store.

Now you have got all the information ready in your mind, it is time to go and shop around and purchase the contact lenses that you want online. Not only should it be easy, but you may find that it is cost effective as well.

Wearing a contact is like wearing a second skin on the most sensitive part of your eye. It might sound quite scary at first but considering the astounding number of people wearing them, it seems the planet is far braver than it seems to be. As I said, it’s like wearing a second skin, which implies the more it behaves like real skin the better and more comfortable it is likely to be. Perhaps that’s the reason why gas permeable contact lenses have stood the proverbial test of time.

Let’s have a quick sneak peek at gas permeable contact lenses.

The Advent

The initial corneal lenses developed way back in the 1950s, which are also called the PMMA corneal lenses, had quite prominent disadvantage. It did not allow oxygen to permeate through, which quite obviously could create a number of clinical complexities. It was this drawback that occasioned the research and development on what has now come to be called ‘gas permeable contact lens.’ They were earlier called ‘rigid gas permeable’ lenses or the RGP lenses. Some experts feel that describing RPG as ‘gas permeable’ is quite misleading because even soft lenses allow the movement of oxygen to a certain extent. However, the oxygen movement is not enough to reduce the irritation caused by the lack of it.

Advantages

These are made of harder plastic materials with no water content, and are thus less flexible than soft contact lenses. Gas permeable lenses help correct quite a wide range of ocular problems including astigmatism. You don’t need to be too careful with these lenses, for they are relatively sturdy, besides the likelihood of infection is scaled down to a large extent. Being tough, they are more durable than the soft lenses.

Disadvantages

They are a little uncomfortable when you start putting them on and require the eyes to adjust to its persistent presence. Though even soft lenses need an adjustment period but it is relatively small. Now, if you wore it for long and then discontinued, it will take a fresh stretch of adjustment period for you to get properly started with it. Another disadvantage is that it may slip away from the center of the eye at times, and may cause blurred vision occasionally. So, it’s pretty much a mixed bag. Choose, if its pluses outweigh its minuses for you.

Lasik eye surgeries are a collective name for a group of surgical procedures that rid the patient of the use of glasses or contact lenses.

These procedures are expensive, and they do have some amount of risk and possible complications. Yet, thousands of people every year undergo these procedures and get rid of the constant use of glasses on contacts. So, when you consider going for this surgery, you need to consider the advantages this procedure will bring you, and weigh it against the risks.

The advantages of having a Lasik eye surgery are substantial. Here’s a detailed description of them:

1. You will look better to most people. There are some people that glasses look good on them, but for most of us, glasses have a negative effect on our appearance. It makes us look in many cases older that our real age, and in makes us look like a "nerd" (even if we’re not). Many models, actors, TV performers and other people who appear before an audience, used a Lasik surgery to get rid of their glasses. If you feel that you look better without glasses, you should consider the surgery. This is especially true for people who have a high number glasses. These glasses look even worse that the others, because of the glass thickness.

2. Save money. Glasses and contact lenses cost money. If fact, it’s a considerable expanse. Let’s do the math: a box of contact lenses costs about $20 and lasts for two weeks (hopefully). That’s $40 a month, $480 a year. If you are wearing glasses, there are high one-time expenses every time you need to buy new glasses. A new pair of glasses may cost thousands of dollars. All these expenses can be avoided if you do the Lasik eye surgery. You’ll become just like "ordinary" people who don’t ware glasses. They don’t have these expenses and therefore can use their money for other things.

3. Sports activities. Have you ever tries to run, plan ball games, swim, box, wrestle of do any other type of sports activity with your glasses or contacts on? If you did, than you already know that it’s not the most comfortable experience. Glasses and contacts limit your movements and many people who ware glasses refrain from certain sports activities because of their glasses. Having the surgery will allow you to engage in any sports you would like to.

As you can see, I believe that the advantages of getting rid of glasses are huge compared to the minor risks of the surgery and the one time cost associated with it. If you think so too, you may want to start making enquiries about the clinics that perform this surgery near your place of resident.

What’s the biggest challenge most people have with their single use contact lenses? It’s end of day dryness. Why is it that one day lenses tend to feel drier than other contacts? And why has Acuvue recently introduced the Acuvue 1 Day Moist to their line of daily disposables?

By design, a single use contact lens is extremely thin and light. If you think about it, manufacturers are stamping out hundreds of thousands of one day contact lenses all the time. Therefore the overall quality per individual lens is going to be a little less than say a lens that is designed and manufactured for monthly replacement.

A one day lens only needs to hold up the eyes elements for about 16 hours maximum, so why would a lens manufacturer put forth the effort to make the lens as comfortable in the 16th hour as it was in the first or second hour? Current market trends are causing single use contact lens manufacturers to re-vamp their operations, which only means better contact lenses for you.

There have been two recent introductions in the one day contact lens market that are designed to address end of day dryness. The first is the Focus Dailies with MoistureLoc. Ciba added the moistureloc agent to their line of dailies recently to combat dryness issues. The lens maintains its moisture more so than the original line of focus dailies.

Even more recently, Acuvue revamped their 1Day to include the new label: Acuvue 1 Day Moist. The material of the lens is the same as the original 1Day, however Vistakon has used what they call Lacreon technology to essentially infuse the lens with moisture locking agents.

If you suffer from end of day dry eye while wearing your contact lens, you may want to ask your eye care provider about the Acuvue 1 Day Moist. As of late 2006, this lens is being rolled out slowly throughout the United States, so your eye care provider may not have access to it just yet. As always, this lens may not be a suitable fit for your eyes and prescription, only your eye care provider can determine that.

The Acuvue Moist is not the only advancement in one day contact lenses. Vistakon is one of many contact lens manufacturers, and the others are also working hard at producing the best contact lens for you.

If you are one of the regular users of the contacts you must be very well aware of the daily regimen with the lenses. Come back home, remove the lenses carefully, rinse them, disinfect them and place them carefully in the lens case.

However, this is routine for those who wear the daily-wear lenses, and not with the extended wear ones. This other type is nothing too far different from the ordinary daily-wear lens, the only difference being that these can be worn overnight.

It was around 1981 that the overnight wearing of contacts was recognized as medically acceptable by the experts. In the beginning one could keep the lens on for as long as two weeks at a stretch. Later, encouraged by the results, the permissible limit was extended to 30 days. However, the honeymoon did not last long and the researchers found that the likelihood of infections was far more pronounced in those who wore them overnight.

Consequently, the maximum approved wear duration shrunk to seven days. But even that was looked upon with suspicion, for in the opinion of a number of experts, overnight wear itself was way too dangerous. So, soon most of the eye specialists started cautioning the users against the overnight use of the contacts.

However, the extended wear lenses have staged a comeback. These lenses have comeback riding on the wave of disposable lenses, which reduces a few risks. Since one has to replace them periodically, the chances of harmful deposits are curtailed. Earlier the lenses were to be cleaned and disinfected regularly but one had to continue with them for a few years before replacing them. In such cases, the possibility of infection increases.

Now, when the lens has to be replaced weekly, one begins with a new lens every week, which cuts down the probability of infections. The advent of silicone hydrogels has also been helpful in bringing the extended use lenses back as they enable enhanced oxygen inflow, which decreases the chaces of infections further.

Did you know that there are several kinds of eye surgeries which improve vision? These types of surgeries on the eyes are called refractive surgery.

The most popular of these eye surgeries is LASIK, but is not the only one by any means. Before you consult with an eye care expert, you need to know your options. Keep in mind that both eyes are not done at once. You will have to have one eye corrected and, after it is healed and focusing, you can look into having your other eye corrected. Eye surgery options which you may want to consider are:

Excimer Laser Procedures are eye surgeries which utilize lasers in reshaping the cornea. This reshaping changes the way that light enters the eye and helps correct focus. The following procedures are Excimer Laser Procedures:

Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis, commonly referred to as LASEK (not to be confused with LASIK, which is different), can be used to treat astigmatism, farsightedness, or nearsightedness. This eye surgery is used if you have flattened or thinned corneas. People who will not get optimal results from LASIK eye surgery are often excellent candidates for LASEK eye surgery. However, it does take a little longer to heal from LASEK eye surgery.

Epi-LASIK eye surgery is done by an eye care professional and is much like LASEK eye surgery. In this eye care procedure, no blade or alcohol is used. Less pain seems to be experienced along with more rapid healing that LASEK eye surgery.

Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, commonly known as LASIK eye surgery, is also used to treat astigmatism, farsightedness, and nearsightedness. Lasers are used to reshape your eye in this eye surgery; scalpels and alcohol are used but the surgery is very quick, less than a minute per eye as a general rule.

All Laser LASIK is a LASIK surgery that does not use a scalpel. Like traditional LASIK eye surgery, lasers are used to reshape the eye. Both discomfort and healing time are reduced because surgery only utilizes lasers.

Photorefractive Keratectomy, commonly known as PRK, is used to treat astigmatism, nearsightedness, and mild farsightedness. In this eye surgery, surface tissue is removed from the cornea (reshaping the eye) using a laser. Like LASIK eye surgery, this surgery takes less than a minute per eye as a general rule.

Non-Excimer Laser Procedures are surgeries in which new lenses are actually places in the eye. The eye is then reshaped using radio waves, lasers, or scalpels. The main Non Eximer Laser Procedure is Astigmic Keratotomy, otherwise known as Limbal Relaxing Incisions. This eye surgery is used to help correct mild astigmatism. Scalpels are used to reshape the eye and the surgery is often used as an enhancement to another eye surgery.

If you are considering eye surgery, you need to know all of your options. This list is a general learning tool but it is recommended that you do further research on any surgery you are interested in or your eye care professional suggests. Keep in mind that each surgery is much like the others, but they are all different as well.

While on surgery may be fine for some peoples lifestyle, it may not be fine for yours. For instance, as a general rule, the older surgeries fit budgets better, but have longer healing times. You need to consider all aspects of eye surgery and how they will impact your life. When figuring healing times into the equation, it is best to plan on the longest healing time named for that surgery. Faster healing is just a bonus, while extended time could cause problems with other life events (such as work).

The color of sunglasses is an important factor in the protection, or lack of it, that these furnish against ultraviolet and infrared radiation. Sunglasses that are tinted gray are believed to give the highest protection. Almost as good are those tinted brown or green. But sunglasses tinted blue or purple can be dangerous. Said Science Digest: "Blue or purple sunglasses can expose you to more ultraviolet radiation than no sunglasses at all! That happens because a dark lens causes your pupils to dilate, which means blue or purple sunglasses inflict ultraviolet rays on your eyes after ‘tricking’ them into lowering their defenses against sunlight."

When shopping for sunglasses, it is always important to check the label or tag to see if the sunglasses are rated to provide full protection from UVA and UVB light. Even though you may pay a little more for such protection, it is well worth the cost compared to the damage that can happen to the eyes, cataract surgery, or, even worse, blindness. You owe it to your eyes to seek the best protection possible!
