Eye lasik surgery is a form of surgery which is done over the eyes. Eye lasik surgery is simply a procedure which is considered as effective for an individual who is virtually dependent upon the constant use of spectacles and contact lenses. The full form of LASIK is Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis. Eye lasik surgery is basically a procedure which is designed to make a specific and a permanent change to the contour of the cornea. Even the clear covering of the upper portion of the eyes can be removed through eye lasik surgery. Eye lasik surgery is done extensively with the paramount excimer laser use.

Immense success has been fostered in the process of Eye lasik surgery, but yet it involves certain amount of risk. It is basically advisable to know about the risks and the complications which might crop up after the Eye lasik surgery has been performed. Some of the probable risk factors which are related with Eye lasik surgery are vision loss, continuance of glasses, severe dry eye problem, lack of proper far sighted vision etc.

In order to undertake Eye lasik surgery, the procedures needed are as firstly, the eyes are provided drops of anesthetic. Secondly, a thin flap over the eyes is removed by the surgeon performing the surgery which is helpful in relieving the inner portion of the tissues which covers the cornea. Thirdly, cool computer proscribed pulses are applied in the inner part of the cornea. Fourthly, after this the flap which has been removed is again gently placed in its original place. Irritation at the initial stage is quite common but later on there is the gradual reduction of the complications which might have been caused due to the Eye lasik surgery.

I would like to add something out here. As I myself is a constant user of contact lenses, I sometimes feel like to opt for Eye lasik surgery and just get rid of its use forever. But while I made planning for it, I sat over the internet and made a study of all the signs and symptoms related to Eye lasik surgery and the precautionary measures which is needed to be followed for Eye lasik surgery. But the consequences which sometimes follow Eye lasik surgery had made me to think over the plan once again. But I am quite determined in this respect that when the right time comes for me to undergo Eye lasik surgery, I will definitely go for it.

Farzina Naznin is herself a constant contact lense wearer. But writing this article she is herself planning to opt for the eye lasik surgery. Further, her articles are published in various sites like http://www.thehealthorganization.org/ and http://www.yourfitnesshealth.com/ Comments are most welcome at farnaznin@gmail.com

Over 35 million people in the United States have opted for the use of contact lenses, over other means of vision correction - the main reason being the advantage in terms of vision improvement and convenience of wear. The problem, however, is where to purchase them from, as it is not very easy to do so. Of late, more and more people are turning towards online sources for their purchase of contact lenses. One of the major advantages of buying contact lenses on the Internet is the ease with which you can source your requirements from the comforts of your home.

The Convenience Of Buying Online No more, the inconvenience of making that trip to the local pharmacy, every time you need to replace your contact lenses. With the type of busy lifestyles that many people have, they may not find it convenient to repeatedly visit the local pharmacy or a merchandiser, every time they need their contact lenses replaced, especially as most contact lenses available today are disposables, whether one day disposables, 1 to 2 week disposables, or 30 day disposable contact lenses.

With the kind of premium many place on their time, online buying saves them time, as it takes a few minutes to reorder their lenses, once they have their prescription. Through the Internet, you have the advantage of gathering price and other information from a variety of online sources, comparing the same, and taking your pick of the best offer. You can compare price, shipping costs, delivery times, and quantity discounts, in addition to rebates and special offers, if any, among other information, from the reputed online contact lenses sources.

There are many other advantages of buying contact lenses on the Internet. Let us look at some of the advantages that online purchasing offers.

Buying Less Expensive Contact Lenses Other than the convenience of buying from the comforts of your home, through the Internet you can source contact lenses from a multitude of suppliers and buy from the least expensive source.

However, keep in mind the subtle difference between contact lenses being ‘less expensive’ and ‘value’ of the contact lenses. To get the better value, look to buy contact lenses from reputable online sources. Reputed manufacturers of contact lenses will allow reputable online websites to display their brand logo. If you are still looking for further less expensive contact lenses, go for generic options available, in place of branded products.

According to a March 2004 report from the Federal Trade Commission, their survey “ . . . indicates that there is not a significant difference in price between mass merchandisers and Internet lens sellers, online sales may have a significant convenience advantage for some consumers.”

Buying online saves you the multiple trips to a ‘mass merchandiser,’ if your prescription is not available on your first visit, and you may have to wait in line, too.

Discount Contact Lenses Through the Internet, it becomes easy for you to search for contact lenses websites that supply most brands of reputed contact lenses, at highly discounted prices. When compared to the prices you can buy them at from the shops in your neighborhood, you will find that the price difference is as much as 50 percent to 70 percent. These websites can afford to sell at such discounted prices as they, on an average, sell tens of thousands of a variety of contact lenses globally, each month.

Daily disposable contact lenses, bifocal lenses, contact lenses for astigmatism, special effect contact lenses for special occasions - such as Halloween or Valentine’s Day – and a variety of other contact lenses from a myriad of manufacturers, including reputed manufacturers, such as Acuvue, or CIBA Vision, can be purchased at heavily discounted prices.

Even after considering the shipping costs involved, buying contact lenses on the Internet is always a bargain, though in most cases shipping is free, and the delivery is efficient. The main reason why online contact lens sellers are able to offer you such unbeatable prices is that they hardly have any overhead. Every time you make a purchase on the Internet you save quite a bundle, and with the number of times you need to fill your prescription for disposable contact lenses, your savings can be tremendous.

The Choice From A Large Selection When buying your contact lenses from conventional sources, your choice for selection is very limited. Most merchandisers will have limited stocks from limited suppliers, limiting your choice.

The Internet offers you a variety that is endless. You have the convenience of selecting from all the major manufacturers of contact lenses, and comparing their various features. If you are shopping for non-prescription, costume contact lenses with no corrective power, the choice for selection can be mind-boggling. There is never a question of your ‘choice’ being out of stock, as you can always find it at any of the many online stores.

If you are looking for branded color contact lenses, such as from Acuvue, or CIBA Vision, they are always available, and you can have your selection delivered to you in a matter of days.

Even with your prescription contact lenses, the selection is wide enough for you to fill your prescription with ease. Get yourself a prescription from your optometrist, go online, browse through the various websites, select the contact lenses that you like, and hit the button. That is all it takes.

A Word Of Caution More and more wearers are seeing the advantages of buying contact lenses on the Internet. Still you need to approach the online sources with a bit of caution. Ensure that you are buying online only from reputed sources, and not from some ‘fly-by-night’ operation. You may be getting ‘cheaper’ contact lenses from some sources, but ensure that they are legal and above board.

When you visit a website selling contact lenses, look for that Verisign logo. This will ensure that your personal information -including credit card information, among other forms of payment - cannot be intercepted by any third party.

Use the same common sense you would use when buying anything from online sources for a great online shopping experience.

Contact lenses are used for vision correction and are placed on the cornea of the eye. They do the same corrective function that conventional spectacles, or glasses, do. However, in comparison, they are very light in weight and are, for all purposes, invisible. Contact lenses help form the image on the retina of the eye by either converging or diverging the rays of light entering the eye.

Earlier contact lenses were made of glass, and were scleral lenses. Scleral lenses are large contact lenses that cover the complete sclera - the white outer coating - of the eye. These unwieldy lenses could only be worn for a short period at a time. With the development of PPMA - polymethyl methacrylate – in the 1930s, plastics were first used in contact lenses. These were in fact, hybrid scleral lenses, made with the combination of both, glass and plastic, in 1936.

By the 1950s, much smaller contact lenses were developed that covered only the cornea of the eye and not the whole eye.

Types of Vision Impairments One of the major uses of contact lenses is to correct visual defects. The general impairments are Myopia, Hyperopia, Astigmatism, and Presbyopia.

  • Myopia – is a visual disability where the image of the object seen is formed in front of the retina. During this visual impairment, one can see objects that are near, and not the distant objects, which appear blurred. This defect is also known as nearsightedness. This is a very common impairment, with over 25 percent of the adults in the United States suffering from it. The defect can be corrected by the use of concave contact lenses.
  • Hyperopia – It is also known as Hypermetropia, and the image of the object is formed behind the retina. Far objects can be seen clearly, and the near objects appear to be blurred. Hyperopia is more commonly known as farsightedness, and more than 13 percent of the children in the United States, in the age group 5 to 17, suffer from it. The defect can be corrected by the use of convex contact lenses.
  • Astigmatism – This happens when the lens of the eye has more than one focal point, in different meridians. Astigmatic people cannot see in fine detail, and need cylindrical lenses to correct their impairment. Nearly 34 percent of American children in the age group 5 to 17 have this impairment.
  • Presbyopia – This is an impairment, which comes with age, generally after the age of 40. The impairment develops as the lens of the eye loses its elasticity. Bifocal contact lenses are used to correct this vision defect.

Lenses Used For Vision Correction In the case of normal vision, the light from the object hits the cornea and focuses on the retina. Due to some refractive error, at times the light from the object does not focus on the retina, but either in front of it, or behind it. To correct this refractive error, contact lenses are used to focus on to the retina.

The type of contact lenses used depends on the type of vision impairment, and how much refractive error is involved. How much the lens bends the light to focus on the retina is measured in diopters (D).

Myopia occurs when the light is focused in front of the retina, as the eyeball is longer than normal. To correct this impairment, which is also known as nearsightedness, a concave lens is used. This lens is thinner at the center, and helps move the focus ahead, towards the retina.

To correct this vision impairment, the curvature in the concave contact lenses is determined by the measurement in diopters. The larger the number of diopters, larger is the vision defect. In myopia, the diopter number is preceded by a minus (-) sign, denoting that the focus is short of the retina.

In the case of hyperopia, the light is focused beyond the retina. Hyperopia is also known as farsightedness, as distant objects are seen clearly in this impairment. The eyeball is shorter than normal, and a convex lens is used to correct this vision defect. The contact lens used is thicker in the center, and helps move the focus back onto the retina.

In this case, too, the curvature required in the convex contact lenses is determined by the measurement in diopters. The diopter number is preceded by the plus (+) sign, denoting that the focus is beyond the retina.

The lenses used for the correction of myopia and hyperopia are categorized as spherical contact lenses.

When the cornea is irregularly shaped, the light from the object falling on the cornea focuses on more than one point. This distortion of the image is called astigmatism. Special lenses need to be designed, based on the individual’s distortion of image. These lenses are known as toric lenses.

Though toric lenses are made of the same materials as the spherical lenses, they are specifically designed to suit individual impairments. These lenses have different curvatures, thicker in some places, and thinner in others. These lenses are designed to correct astigmatism and myopia or hyperopia, if required.

For the correction of presbyopia, special bifocal lenses are required, as the person suffering from it requires both correction for nearsightedness and farsightedness. In such lenses, either the correction for near impairment is placed in the center of the lens, with the distant correction on the outside, or vice versa.

Types Of Contact Lenses The initial lenses were rigid lenses that did not absorb water. This kept the oxygen from passing into the cornea of the eye, causing eye irritation and other discomforts.

Then came the soft contact lenses made from hydrogel, which allowed oxygen to pass through them to the cornea. These lenses came to be known as ‘breathable’ contact lenses. This made it possible for contact lenses to be worn comfortably and for longer periods. Today, there are:

Daily wear lenses, which are removed at night. Extended wear lenses that can be worn for extended periods without removing. Disposable lenses that can be discarded after a day, a week, or a few weeks.

In addition, there are color contacts, which are for cosmetic purpose.

Cheap contact lenses are something many people want. Because taking care of your eyes can get expensive, saving money in the eye wear department is sometimes a must. However, knowing where to shop and look for the savings is something that not everyone knows.

Online is probably the most popular place to buy cheap contact lenses. When you do a search online for cheap contact lenses, you are sure to come up with many places to choose from. You will need to remember that when you buy your contact lenses online, you will need a copy of your contact prescription that your doctor took, as well as the measurements for your eyes. After all, what good is a pair of cheap contact lenses if they do not fit, and you can not see.

You can find cheap contact lenses at wholesale places that sale contact lenses in bulk as well. While purchasing your contact lenses in bulk may not have been something you considered, you may want to consider it. Find out what the minimum purchase is to get your contact lenses at their cheaper price, and just order the minimum if it makes sense to you. Someone who wears disposable contact lenses may actually benefit from bulk purchasing, as long as the amount they had to purchase at one time was not outrageous.

Ask your optometrist where you can buy cheap contact lenses. Your optometrist may understand that you need to buy your contact lenses cheap, and let you know of a few good places that you can do this. Of course, it might mean money out of the optometrists pocket for you to purchase your contact lenses elsewhere. However, by losing some money on the contact lenses, they are sure to make it up in your return visits for pointing you in the right direction.

As you can see, cheap contact lenses are online, can be purchased in bulk, or maybe even a well kept secret by your eye doctor. Try these places and see if you can save some money on your next pair of contact lenses.

Acuvue Oasys contact lenses are a great version of the regular Acuvue, or Acuvue 2 contact lenses. While the Oasys contact lenses do have some special features about them, they are still a version of the regular contact lenses that we already know and trust.

Acuvue Oasys contact lenses are disposable, which means that you wear them for a little while, and when the time is up, you throw them away, and pop in a fresh pair of contact lenses. Wearing disposable contact lenses is a great way to keep down eye infections and irritations that might normally occur. The disposable feature of the Oasys contact lenses, are a great feature wether you want to wear them for a week, or stretch their life out to two weeks long at a time. You can choose to wear them for two weeks at a time if you take them out of your eyes on a daily basis, or you can leave them in your eyes and sleep in them for a week and then toss them.

Acuvue Oasys are also known for the UV blocking feature. Because these contact lenses are able to help you protect your eyes from sun’s harmful rays, it should set your mind at ease when you leave the house and forget to grab your sunglasses. Eye wear that protects your eyes from the UV rays is obviously eye wear that you can trust.

While all of these great features are pretty much the same as the other Acuvue contact lenses, there is still one more great feature the Acuvue Oasys has that is different. This Oasys contact lens is designed to help keep your eye’s wetter. While you will find that your eyes stay wetter, you will also see that the contact lenses that are oasys are also some what smoother. This is a great alternative for someone who did not want to wear contact lenses because they were worried about their eyes drying out. The oasys feature will keep your eyes from drying, and help them not feel quite so tired after a long day anymore.

The Acuvue Oasys contact lenses have many great features just as the other Acuvue contact lenses do. However, having dry eyes with contact lenses is a concern for many people. The oasys will help prevent your eyes from drying out, and in return you will have a pair of contact lenses that you can wear and enjoy without having dry eyes.

Acuvue contact lenses are a very popular brand of contact lenses. From disposable, to regular contacts, you will find that they are very comfortable to wear. Wether you are using this brand for astigmatism or not, you will find they feel very natural on your eyes allowing you to be more productive and not worrying about your contact lenses.

The disposable Acuvue contact lenses can be worn up to two weeks at a time. Disposable contact lenses are great for keeping your eyes as healthy as possible, and popping in fresh contacts after a week or two. The disposable contact lenses from Acuvue, can be slept in, as well. This means that you put your contact lenses into your eyes only once, and not remove them until the time is up and you replace them with a new pair.

Replacing your disposable Acuvue contact lenses on a regular basis helps keep germs down and out of your eyes. Nothing feels better than a new pair of contact lenses in your eyes, and with these disposable contact lenses, you can have this great feeling every week or so.

Most of the Acuvue contact lenses are sold with a tint to the lens. The tint on the lens will not change the color of your eyes, but it will make it easier for you to see the contact lens as you are handling them. The tinted contact lenses also make it easier for you to find them if one is ever dropped. Because most clear contact lenses are hard to see, the tinted ones allow you to look for a tint of color on the floor or surface you may have dropped it on.

Acuvue contact lenses are a great brand of lenses. They are made by Johnson and Johnson, and you are sure to get quality lenses each and every time. For more reading on Acuvue contact lenses, be sure to check out the articles on Acuvue 2, Acuvue Oasys, and Acuvue advance.

The best place to go to buy something special would be everywhere! You will find gifts wherever you go; in a bazaar, a mega sale or in a tag sale. There is bound to be something here that will be unique and special, and thus worth buying. You know when a loved one’s function or birthday will be around the corner; so you may as well buy something well in advance, to be gifted on the special day.

It is not that you have to always present something materialistic; there are many other ideas for a gift. You could present painting lessons or art history courses to the art enthusiast or perhaps a gift certificate of a shopping mall. Welcome services are always welcome as a gift! The tired housewife and mother will consider a body massage and some baby-sitting time the best gifts of the world! No gift could resist the opportunity of spending some quality time on oneself. Besides baby sitting and body massage, you could also present a fruitful day in the spa with all treatments or the services of a chef for a day to rid the mother of cooking for a day. All these ideas are booming ideas for the tired and busy mother.

Some people have a hobby of collecting antiques and artifacts. You could keep your eyes out for rare prints of books or notes, books that are no longer in circulation or antiques in internet auction sites and chat rooms. It is not that you spend loads on the antique; just buy something small, rare and memorable. If you love making things, you can always create gifts to be gifted. You could perhaps bake a lovely cake, or knit a pair of gloves or socks for your granny. Candle making is rampant today, so use your imagination to produce a candle that is attractive to the eye of the admirer.

If you are really lost on the perfect, unique gift for your loved one, you could always get the help of the internet. You could just follow links, till you find something interesting that could be gifted. If you are not the creative type to make something special as a presentation, you can still create something special for a gift. All you have to do is to approach a craftsman who makes unique gifts. You give an idea of the kind of gift you would like to make to your loved one, and the craftsman will definitely think up of something special to create for you.

Learn to mix and match, to create something new. Combine two items to create a single, stunning gift as a presentation. The unique lamp looks better with that lamp shade that you bought at a tag sale; use it together as a gift for your loved one. There is basically no steadfast rule for unique gifts; just use your imagination. For inspiration, you could leaf through magazines. But perspiration is needed for creating the unique gift!

Have you ever wondered about the history of contact lenses? You know, how it came about, who’s the genius that invented it, who in the world dared to stuff things down their eyelids back then?

I thought it’d be interesting to know such things. That’s why I’ve written this article for those of you who are also keen to know! ;)

1508 - In his Codex of the eye, Manual D, the general principle of contact lenses came about when Leonardo da Vinci described about how the corneal power of the eye may be altered when it is submerged in a bowl of water.

1636 - René Descartes proposed to correct vision with a liquid-filled glass tube placed in direct contact with the cornea. But this idea didn’t pick up since people couldn’t blink with that device!

1801 - Thomas Young invented an eyecup that was filled with liquid too.

1845 - Sir John Herschel proposed 2 suggestions to correct eyesight; firstly using "a spherical capsule of glass filled with animal jelly", and secondly "a mould of the cornea" that may be made onto "some sort of transparent medium".

1887 - In the history of contact lenses, Adolf Eugen Fick successfully fitted the first pair of scleral contact shells made of brown glass in Zürich.

1888 - August Müller improved the type of lenses Adolf Eugen Fick made so that it could be worn longer, this time made with blown glass.

1930 - It was somewhere in this decade when polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA or Perspex/Plexiglas) was developed that plastic scleral lenses could be made. Dr. William Feinbloom then introduced plastic lenses that were lighter and more convenient.

1950 - In this decade, the first ‘corneal’ lenses came about. Being much smaller than their scleral predecessors, these contact lenses rested only on the cornea, and became widely accepted throught the ’60s.

1971 - The FDA approved the use of ‘Soflens’ material. Yep, that’s what we know as ’soft lens’ today.

1999 - Silicone hydrogel was introduced, which has extremely high oxygen permeability, and the lenses could be worn for an extended period of time.

There you go. Thanks to those scientists who work day and night to create better inventions that benefit mankind, we can see without glasses! ;)

Of course, people have different preferences, and some may like contacts, others may choose just to put on eyeglasses, and yet others prefer to go for surgery.

Whoever said, "Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses" clearly had no idea about the way in which the right frames can flatter a face. The explosion of designer glasses onto the market in recent years at least demonstrates that the truly stylish have not under-estimated their value.

But, with so many different varieties to chose from how do you go about picking the right pair? The answer lies in the three “s”es: shape, shade and style.

Shape

The shape of your face is crucial in determining what types of glasses are likely to suit you.

Long faces: If you have a long or oblong shaped face try choosing glasses that have wide frames and curved edges. This will help balance out the length of your face.

Round faces: If you have a round face you should ideally avoid square and round frames which tend to make round faces look even rounder. Instead opt for glasses with straight top and bottom frames.

Triangular faces: Glasses with curved rims really suit people with triangle shaped faces.

Shade

Most people fall into two colour types:

  • Warm
  • Cool

Warm types have a yellow tinge to their skin and their hair is either black, honey blonde or red.

Cool types have a blue or pink cast to their skin and their hair is brown, white blonde or white.

If you are a warm type the following colour glasses are likely to suit you:

  • Gold
  • Copper
  • Tortoise
  • Khaki
  • Camel
  • Cream
  • If you are a cool type you will probably look good in the following colour of glasses:

    • Plum
    • Rose brown
    • Jade
    • Blue
    • Magenta
    • Black
    • Style

When it comes to choosing the style of your glasses, it all depends what kind of look you are going for. Jackie O style glasses are very glamorous whilst John Lennon glasses suggest quirkiness and individuality. Alternatively, you could opt for a “sexy secretary” look with a pair of thick framed glasses.

The best way to decide which style you like is to go to an optician and try different pairs on. You may well find that what you thought you wanted does not look right at all at the pair you never would have considered makes you look like a film star!

Choosing sunglasses is not that tough a chore.

You see, you don’t need to spend a lot of money to get a pair of sunglasses that protect your eyes and look good too.

Also, an expensive pair of designer sunglasses does not necessarily equate to good shades.

Picking out the best pair of sunglasses for yourself is, in fact, quite a simple affair.

There are lots of different shapes, colors, tints, materials, lenses available in the market.

Here’s some advice on how you should choose:

      - Make sure that the sunglasses you want to buy filter/absorb no less than 99% of all UV-A and UV-B rays. This offers the best ever protection for your eyes. Just because the lenses are dark does not mean they offer UV protection.

      - Several tints are available out of which gray and green are the least distortive and most protective.

      - It is important that you choose the material of the lenses carefully. There are quite a few options to choose from – photo chromatic, polarized, polycarbonate or the more traditional glass.

      - Depending on usage and range of exposure to sunlight, you can choose the one that fits your activity description best.

      - For people with presbyopia or prescription lenses, the option of getting prescription sunglasses is also available. They are better as they offer both correct vision and UV protection.

Keeping the above pointers in mind, remember it’s not just fashionable to sport sunglasses.

Since frames are very personalized, nothing ever goes out of fashion.

Stick to frames and lenses that you like and are comfortable with and go soak up some sun!
