There are many types of contact lenses, and choosing the one that you like best can be a bit challenging. The different types of lenses carry different sets of advantages, so you might want to read on and decide on the type you like best.

Daily-wear soft contact lenses. These lenses are made of soft, flexible plastic. The plastic allows oxygen to pass through, which results in greater comfort for the wearer. Daily-wear soft lenses need to be cleaned daily, using a special solution.

Daily-wear disposable soft lenses. These lenses are similar to daily-wear soft lenses with the exception that they are designed to be used and discarded within the span of one day. Usually, new lenses are worn every morning and thrown away at night. Because you never keep a pair for more than a day, you will never have to clean your disposable soft lenses.

Extended-wear soft lenses. Extended-wear soft lenses are lenses used for overnight wear and beyond. You can wear extended-wear soft lenses for up to a week without removing them.

Extended-wear disposable soft lenses. These lenses are designed to be worn continuously for up to a week, and then discarded. Like other disposable lenses, they require little cleaning.

Planned replacement soft lenses. These are lenses that are replaced on a regular schedule, such as every two weeks, monthly, etc. The big advantage of replacing your lens regularly is that it assures you of clean, bacteria-free lenses.

Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) lenses. RGP lenses are a new generation of contact lenses. These lenses have silicone in them, which allows more oxygen to pass through, resulting in greater comfort and overall better eye health. RGP lenses are also more durable and provide better vision than do soft lenses.

Is there such a thing as natural vision correction? Is this a myth?

I mean, many of us - myself included - have been wearing glasses or contact lenses for years. Never once have our optometrists told us there are natural ways to improve our vision by exercising our eyes.

(Come to think about it, maybe they did know and are not telling us, because if these methods do work, we won’t be prescribing glasses and contact lenses anymore.)

Apparently there is such a thing as natural vision correction.

What is natural vision correction?

It comprises a series of exercises that train your eye muscles – just like you’ll train your biceps and abs - which over time leads to the natural improvement of your vision.

The focusing abilities of your eyes are controlled by a series of internal muscles. Due to the many stresses put upon the visual system, the use of glasses and contacts (yes, some research shows that wearing glasses and contact lenses can worsen your eyesight over time), and the natural aging process itself, these muscles become weak and distorted, therefore resulting in blurred vision.

What natural vision correction exercises do is to strengthen and train these muscles — just as you would any other weak muscles in your body — and redirect your point of focus, thus helping you see clearly without corrective lenses and preventing further deterioration of our eyes.

Scientific Proof

Is there scientific proof that eye exercises can improve one’s vision? I did some research and this is one of the studies I found:

"Symptoms were totally eliminated in 53% of the patients, reduced in 43% and remained the same in only 4%.

Therefore …an overall success rate of 96%. There is an impressive and increasing body of evidence attesting to the trainability of accommodative function." (From a study of 96 patients with some type of accommodative dysfunction who had completed a vision therapy program.) — Irwin B. Suchoff, O.D., and Timothy G. Petito, O.D. (1986) Journal of the American Optometric Association

Conclusion

Natural vision correction is a therapy that’s definitely worth considering, especially if you’re thinking about Lasik eye surgery (like I am).

I’ve been trying out an eye exercise for vision improvement in my ongoing quest to find effective ways to correct my near-sightedness. It’s easy to do, and maybe, just maybe, I won’t need to consider lasik eye surgery after all. You can practice this at home, at work or at school.

This vision improvement exercise is affectionately called "Three Cups". (Sounds like some magician’s trick doesn’t it?) There are three levels to it; I’ll just give you the Level 1 exercise here. What it does is improve the focus and coordination of your eyes.

You’ll need a diagram of the cups to do this. I’ll give you the link to go to the site with the image in a minute.

Follow these steps

1. Find a pen or pencil.

2. Sit in your chair, relaxed of course, so you’re 12 to 24 inches from your computer screen at eye level. Don’t stare hard the image (of the cups), just be able to make them out.

3. Hold up the pen upright between the two circles (cups) about 1 inch from your screen. Make the tip of the pen the same level as the cups in the diagram.

4. Now, just relax your eyes on the top of the pen or pencil as you slowly move it towards your face. as you do this, you’ll start seeing three circles instead of two. Here’s the part to pay attention: when you see that the three circles are all the same size and shape, stop the pen.

5. Move your eyes’ focus away from the top of the pen to the center circle. If you don’t get it the first time, do it a few times. Some people may need a few days to practice. I had a little difficulty to make the center circle "stay" initially.

6. Once you can fix your focus on the center cup, move the pen away while trying to keep your focus. The center circle will become clearer and clearer as you become good at it.

7. Final step and the "magical" part: without your pen this time, look at the two circles and create the center circle as 3-dimensionally as possible.

Conclusion

Do these eye exercises work? Can they improve your vision so that you become less reliant or have no need for glasses anymore? Eye exercises have worked for many people to different degrees depending on each person’s situation. I think it’s definitely worth trying. Who doesn’t want to be rid of the dependence on glasses and contact lenses?

Do you wear bifocals? Do you find when trying to use your computer it is hard to see the screen? Do you have to make head/neck adjusts? Have you ever thought about trying computer/reading glasses? If you answered yes, read on.

When you finally graduate into bifocals now is the time the fun starts. If you have the line that separates your bifocals from your distance vision; it is a hard adjustment to make. If you have the blended glasses it is a much easier transformation. Either way you will definitely have to reorient yourself when walking or reading.

When you use your computer and you have the blended/or line bifocals it is a huge adjustment for your eyes. You will sit in front on the computer screen moving your head up, down and sideways trying to see out of the small area designated for reading.

If you wear make my words bold computer/reading glasses it is a much easier transformation. When you sit at the computer you do not have to make adjustments to your head and neck in order to see the screen. You can just sit down and start typing or reading.

With computer/reading glasses if you like to lie down and read this is possible. When you have computer/reading glasses they can be tinted to relieve computer glare. Your eyes will love you.

When was the last time you had your eyes examined? When was the last time you purchased new eye glasses? Do you have headaches? Can you see clearly to drive? Can you see clearly when you read? If you answered yes to any of these questions, read on.

We only get one set of eyes in our lifetime. We need to take care of them. We need crystal clear vision when driving to avoid accidents and to read the road signs.

Our eyes talk to us on a daily basis. If they are not happy they will be blurry, burning and you might have a headache or eye ache. We need to listen to our eyes.

If our children are receiving poor grades in school maybe they can not see the chalkboard. Maybe they can not see close up but they can not convey this to you.

We must take care of our eyes. We use them constantly. If we need to wear glasses get them and wear them. Many of us have glasses; especially, for reading but feel they age us; consequently, do not wear them.

Our eyes are important. Take care of them and they will take care of you.

If you are one of millions of people who suffer form some kind of vision problem, you are probably already using some kind of vision correction aid - such as glasses or contact lenses.

You have also probably heard of the Lasik eye surgery. Lasik is actually a group of surgical procedures that are carried out in order to correct near- and far-sightedness in vision.
Many patients undergo a LASIK surgery as an alternative to wearing corrective glasses or contact lenses. But you should know that while procedures such as LASIK have the ability to provide acute vision there is no way to quantify the quality of vision the patient will have after the surgery.

The operation itself involves peeling thin layers from the patient’s cornea, using precise laser technology. The pealing of this layer corrects the imperfection in the patent’s cornea thus giving them the vision correction that is usually provided by their glasses or contact lenses.

In preparation to the surgery, a patient who wears soft contact lenses will be asked to stop wearing them 10 days before the surgery. Users of hard contacts are instructed to stop using them six weeks before the surgery.

Before the surgery, the patient’s cornea surface are scanned with a special computer and their pattern is recorded. This will provide the doctor with precise information on how much tissue should be removed during the operation. The patients is also instructed to start taking anti-biotic to reduce the risk of infection.

The surgery itself is performed under a mild sedative (such as Valium) and anesthetic eye drops. After the procedure, the patient is given a course of antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops.

Patients are also given a darkened pair of goggles to protect their eyes from rubbing when asleep. It is advised to wear these from four to eight weeks depending on the nature of the surgery.

So, if a quick Lasik surgery can rid you of our glasses for good, why aren’t all glasses wearing people go to a clinic and get it done?

Like almost all medical procedures, Lasik surgery has some disadvantages and complications. First of all, a good Lasik surgery can cost a hefty sum, and not all health insurances will cover the costs (some will cover only part of the costs). And second, there are complication that are associated with this procedure. About %3-%6 of patients tend to suffer from one or more of the following complications:

Dry eyes
Over correction or under correction
Visual acuity fluctuation
Halos or star bursts around light sources at night
Light sensitivity
Ghosts or double vision
Wrinkles in flap
De centered ablation
Debris or growth under flap
Thin or buttonhole flap
Induced astigmatism
Epithelium erosion
Posterior vitreous detachment

As you can see, this procedure is not problem free. Before undergoing such a procedure, ask yourself if the glasses you wear as so bad that you are willing to do this operation to get rid of them. If the answer is less than a resounding "yes", you better reconsider this operation.

Are you tired of your poor vision? Have you spent years wearing contact lenses or correctional eye wear, only for your vision to continue to decline as time passes? Do you dream of a day where you can live uninhibited by glasses or contact lenses but worry because you suffer from astigmatism, myopia, hyperopia, or perhaps other irregularities, and are afraid this can keep you from going ahead with any correctional procedures?

Wavefront LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) could be the answer to your concerns. This procedure, basically considered a custom form of the widely-used LASIK surgery, goes deeper than traditional LASIK by using special equipment to take 3-dimensional measurements that better guide the laser used in surgery as it reshapes your cornea and fixes most, if not all corneal irregularities your eyes may have.

Because wavefront laser surgery was originally geared towards people with moderate-to-severe vision defects, it is necessary to be screened and qualified for the procedure before being allowed to undergo the correction. There are guidelines set up by the FDA that need to be taken into consideration, as well as factors such as your corneal thickness and degree of irregularities. And while traditional LASIK surgery itself can help correct common defects, wavefront LASIK and Waveprint mapping software has opened the doors so that even those with less-common and more serious eye irregularities can take part in a life less-dependent upon vision correction through the use of contact lenses or prescription glasses.

The number of patients choosing custom LASIK procedures over more traditional LASIK surgery is growing, given the fact that wavefront LASIK gives the opportunity for better results and less chance of post-surgery complications such as impaired night vision and seeing halos and glare coming off of light sources. The chances of achieving 20/20 vision (or perhaps even better than 20/20 vision) is also much greater due to the care taken to custom-map the procedure to your eye’s ability to process what it sees in the world around you. And with wavefront LASIK, the chances of your vision declining as time goes by is also diminished.

Custom LASIK — because it is a custom procedure and requires more in-depth treatment and use of special equipment unnecessary to traditional LASIK surgery — costs anywhere from $100 to $500 more than normal LASIK surgery, meaning an average estimated cost of approximately $1800 per eye. But, given the advantages of custom LASIK to the traditional procedure, many people seem to believe the extra money spent on custom wavefront LASIK is well worth it.

The glare of the sun on water surfaces reflects a high level of polarized light. The reflection of polarized light can be reflected horizontally depending upon what time of day it is. When using Polarized Sunglasses around water such as lakes or creeks, the water is more transparent to the sight. Many experienced fishermen know that using Polarized Sunglasses is a big advantage to finding that award winning fish. Not only are fishermen using these sunglasses, but also many people are now wearing Polarized Sunglasses to enjoy outdoor activities like Boating, Water Skiing, Jet Skiing, etc. Polarized Sunglasses significantly lower the reflection of light that bounces off of water surfaces and other reflective surfaces such as a vehicle that one is waxing and many non-metal surfaces.

Another useful idea is to use these sunglasses while driving. Polarized Sunglasses while driving around snowy conditions and through rain lessons your eye fatigue as well. Other benefits to wearing Polarized sunglasses is glare free vision, better perception of colors and 100% UVA & UVB light ray protection.

Many of today’s products use polarized lenses like the ones found in cameras and your must have laptop. Most Polarized Sunglasses have Shatter Proof and Scratch Proof Lenses. Exposing your eyes to harmful light rays can cause eye problems later on in life, so protect your vision and the vision of your children Today!

Get you and your family into the habit of wearing some sort of eye protection, because some protection from the sun is better than none. If you are a driver and your job puts you on the road for many hours a day, or if you are a farmer who is required to be outside for most of the day, or you are a salesman doing door to door sales, or even if you are just a avid fan of sports who spends time outside watching your kids play on their baseball team you need to protect your eyes from UVA & UVB rays as much as possible to save your vision as you get older.
